You may also want to note that corporeal beast sometimes randomly use an attack with the speed of 1.8 seconds instead of 2.4, which is going to mess up quite a lot of things for you, and this is the key to most deaths in my attempts. 1. Food and Water

During an emergency it is important to stay well hydrated. Any emergency survival kit should have a sufficient supply of water, as well as sanitary ways to drink it. With the recent fierce weather being in the news, I’ve been looking at various survival kits for earthquakes/tornados/hurricanes/floods, etc. (No, I don’t expect all of those to come at me at once.)

I was wondering what people recommend? Buying your own? Is there a particular brand that you like? What do you do with the various supplies in there when they near their expiration date? Eat them? Donate them?

My family’s always tended toward buying in bulk so we always have plenty on hand for whatever reason. What do you do?

You can make your own. Get a large plastic bin. In it you put,blanks,basic clothing,food(can and can opener), candy of your choose,and any meds. You might want to put in a first aide kit too. Also pet food(if you have them) and drinking water. Keep an eye on your expiration dates and use items before they go bad.

How are you going to find food?  You’ll need a rifle or shotgun and a handgun would be resourceful.  Also you’ll need to buy a good long bow and arrows plus arrowheads just in case the electric is shut off for years. Acquiring marksman skills will help as well.

According to the state in which you live, you should start out by contacting the government office and get a weapons permit. Every state has varying regulations which govern the decisions as to whether someone can legally own a handgun, rifle or shotgun. Again, your local police department definitely will show you in the right direction.

When you’re ready to buy a good supply of ammo, it may be in your best interest to buy them with cash so as to leave no smoking gun to alarm authorities. Additionally, never buy extra big supplies of ammo at one time from the same place.

Psychological testing documented that 90% of people will steal if they discern they have a perceived need and can justify their behavior and feel they can go safely unexposed. This means anything of value you possess can be a lure to those without what they need under severe conditions. You should hide your supplies in places that are very difficult for others to locate. A disaster could strike from anywhere, a hurricane. an earthquake, a terrorist attack, a snow or ice storm or a tornado could happen at any time. One of the first things that happen during a disaster is that the vital and fundamental services that we take for granted in our day to day lives come to a complete halt. Electric power lines are usually the first essentials to fail in times of disaster. For safety and to prevent fires natural gas lines are shut down. Telephones will not work and cell phones if they continue to work will be overwhelmed with calls. Water lines also break, and even if they don\’t they may be filled with water that is not fit to drink. Streets become danger zones, traffic lights are out, traffic jams, accidents or rubble can make streets and highways impassable or, at best, not safe for vehicles. Vehicles in garages with automatic doors will be trapped inside. Even if your vehicle is available and you venture out, because street lights are out you face dangerous crossings at every intersection. Suppose you find a store that is open. They will accept only exact cash amounts for whatever they have available if anything. You have to ask yourself should you risk driving anyway?

Once your gas tank runs dry you won\’t able to get any more because the pumps at the gas station run on electricity. Without some other source of heat, the temperature in your house goes down and down without the electricity to run a furnace. Even if you live in the country side and have your own well, you won\’t be able to get water because the well pump runs on electricity too. Sanitary conditions deteriorate rapidly because even though you might be able to use the toilet – only once – but with broken water pipes or without electricity to start a pump, toilets would not refill themselves. There is an increasing number of sites that tell you to be ready for disaster or civil unrest by putting together basic survival kits and what not. Do you think something might happen? There is a much different procedure when preparing for survival through a long term disaster such as a severe earthquake than simply evacuating during a flood or fire. A disaster, such as an earthquake or terrorist attack, may have wiped out communication, utilities, roads, bridges, hospitals, public services such as police and ambulances. In case of a local disaster that affects only a small area of your state, you would not necessarily need a survival emergency kit, but rather a “personal kit” A personal kit (back pack) should not be so large that it is difficult for you to carry it and you may be tempted to discard it.

I would suggest that you not procrastinate any longer, if you have failed thus far to research survival information. For a case in point, how long do you need to boil water in order to kill all bacteria? (Answer: 10 minutes.) What are the symptoms for heat stroke, hypothermia, shock or dehydration and what is more, how would you treat these conditions? Knowledge of answers to questions like these could someday save a life, maybe your own. Knowledge gathering could be equally as important as food and water storage.

Start gathering information today about the skills of survival from your local library, book stores and the internet. In addition to survival books, much survival knowledge can be obtained from specialty books on camping, such as living off the land, starting a fire, and how to build a shelter.

A unique, practical way of determining what may be needed for your survival supplies and tools may be to simply think through an emergency situation or an actual emergency that would require you to leave your home and imagine various possible scenarios of a day’s activities.

Try imagining a camping trip, and think about it from the time you arrive and start setting up your tent and camp the first day, straight through to the next night when you crawl back into your sleeping bag. What about how you would cook breakfast, start a fire, uh oh, toilet paper? Imagine all the items needed in each day’s activities. Are you making a list and checking it twice?

Do you require prescription medicines? Do your eyes require glasses to see? What if you lost or broke them? Maybe… a second pair for your kit? How far can you walk without shoes? What if you or a companion broke an arm or received a serious laceration? Do you have a first-aid kit and is it adequate for treating serious injuries? Is there more than one of you? Do your companions have first-aid or survival supplies of their own, or do they need to rely on you?

Think through all the steps involved in surviving through various scenarios. What about food, shelter or firewood. How do you or how will you make a fire to cook on or keep warm at night? What will you sleep on? By imagining various possible situations, you will know what you need in each separate case. You will then know what your survival emergency kit needs to contain.

Survival Hardware
Two basic requirements needed to survive are the ability to cut things and the skills and tools to make a fire. In other words, you will need a good, sturdy knife, some waterproof matches, a lighter and even a fire-starter steel/flint kit.

Your personal kit should contain these items plus a good first-aid kit (should also contain a suture set & antibiotic cream). The personal kit is sometimes referred to as a bug-out bag. The internet has many available free lists of suggested items for this purpose. A Google of “bug-out bag” will result in thousands of search results.

Here is an example of just a few such items:

You should be listening to the weather reports and the reports on where the worst damage is and what they are doing to try and rescue the people in the areas hardest hit. Do not try to wade your way out of the house if the water is waist high or even lower because you don’t know what is in the murky waters and there could be a current and it could sweep you away. The only thing you can do is wait out the storm.

If you must climb to higher ground, which would be the rooftop, then you would need to ‘dig’ a hole in the ceiling and roof of the house to crawl out of. This is where the pick ax would come in handy. If you have a slanted roof, you might want to keep some rope or climbing twine and a large clip that one would use for climbing in the attic or your survival bag to tether yourself to something strong in the attic.

Since you are now on the outside, you may be able to get cell phone reception and call for help. If it is still raining and blowing strong winds – you will know if you are listening to the radio and if that is the case, do not dig your way out until it clears up. And remember, the search and rescue workers are extremely busy and unless you are hurt, you will have to be patient and wait until they can get to you, either by boat or helicopter.

You need water, batteries, flashlights, food, and an oil lamp, matches and or a lighter, baby wipes (for hygene) and some kind of sturdy, but temporary shelter, like a small pup-tent with a sleeping bag. A map, a compass and a battery operated raido or hand crank self charging raido. Oh yeah and a first aid kit too with bandages and ointments and stuff…

Walmart sells pre packaged disaster kits in the sporting goods section. You could go see one and use it as a template.

You also have to control pests and diseases that can wipe out your crops, plus your growing season needs to be right in order to have success. Some advantages to growing your own food include: it’s typically healthier, taste better, fresher, offers a wide variety, great source of natural nutrients and can be fun and rewarding. However, the shelf life of fresh food is measured in days, unless proper storing and preservation methods are used. Even then the shelf life is relatively short and requires knowledge, the right materials and time to successfully complete.

A major concern of having a garden in your yard in a long term survival event is that it can make you a target to thieves as it’s hard to hide fresh growing plants, especially in an urban area. This could be similar to placing a sign outside your house saying “we are prepared, come take our stuff”. People, who would rather take from others, than to prepare for themselves, will look for these types of signs as easy victims for their own selfish needs. So what should we do?

Growing your own food can be accomplished on a smaller scale by growing plants inside your dwelling in planters and pots. This will not provide enough food in itself, but will provide variety and fresh nutrients in your diet. Unfortunately, this will also limit what you can successfully grow; for example corn, grains and other sun loving plants will not do well inside. But, herbs, lettuces, and other delicates should do well.

With this in mind, we recommend a large portion of your food storage supplies come from prepared long term food storage products. The range of prepared foods should included grocery supplies of canned vegetables, fruits, meats, fish and meals. Dried foods such as noodles, rice, legumes, seasonings, spices and dried herbs should be well accounted for and acquired as well. All of these items can be purchased in small quantities as part of your regular trips to your local grocery store and should be well stored and rotated as part of your regular meal preparations.

Another source of prepared meals is freeze dried and dehydrated foods from manufactures that specialize in long term food storage. These manufacturers typically offer a wide variety of meals including breakfast and other entrée meals that are better tasting than what you would finds years ago and provide well balanced nutrients. I personally prefer the smaller packages of complete meals as they are easy to prepare and reduce the amount of waste from preparing too large of a quantity when refrigeration is not available. These meals are easy to prepare using hot water, can be ready in minutes, are typically easy to store, are very light and have an extended shelf life of as much as twenty-five years. Plus they are a quick way to get started as they can be purchased in small quantities and will rapidly start to increase your food stores. They do require space to store and should be rotated and used first in, first out as with other food products to account for their expiration. However, the advantages of prepared food storage far outweigh the negatives and should be a major portion for effective long term urban survival.

Many urban dwelling individuals can help prepare and secure their family by adopting a balanced food storage plan of small growing operations, adequate grocery items and by acquiring prepared food for storage that includes freeze dried and dehydrated foods. All of these items can be purchased in smaller quantities on a regular basis to rapidly build your food stores. But you should know the tricks of finding the right kind of plants and the best technique for hunting wild animals. Learning To Trap Animals

Since you may not have firearms to assist you in hunting, and you may not be adept in hunting for wild animals using knives and ropes, it is necessary to know how to arrange snares and traps. I was a Costco yesterday picking up some food trays for the party i was having for the boxing match and there was a woman demoing survival food. I know many people who have a case of survival rations, I do too, from when I lived up north, encase i ever got snowed in. Yet, what surprised me was the sale of milled oats and dehydrated milk. I tried the milk and asked the woman what brought this on, and another man said it was for the Mormons.

I have heard a lot of nonsense about the Mormons since I moved to Arizona, I was just wondering if it was true that you have to store food and if you are survivalists. Also, I shoot sporting clays, I rented the range out one night for a corporate event, and one of my Mormon co-workers declined to attend, saying he was not a big gun guy. If you are survivalists, whats the point of hoarding if you don’t have guns?

Anyways, I have no problem with the Mormons, even as a black guy I have always been treated with respect, I just want to know what the deal is.

I’ve seen a surge in advertising so called “Disaster Survival Kits” for your home (even US Government sites recommending it). My friends are all hyped up for this after seeing how the Earthquake in Haiti hit the country. I just can’t imagine that running to some room in my house to get a heavy backpack is such a good idea…besides that, the stuff i need after a earthquake is different than stuff i need after a hurricane or flood or whatever disasters there are (earthquakes: they recommend a tent….useless after Hurricane Katrina….water everywhere, people on roofs…)

The point is _to take it with you_, not to go back for it. A kit should be designed to contain the things you are most likely to need in the event of a disaster. If you live in a hurricane area, maybe not a tent, but a tarp to spread on some patch of dry land or roof. Everything in it should be in a waterproof container.

Two Storage a problem? Use areas most don’t think of. The pantry is good for many things but if you’re putting up dozens of jars of spaghetti sauce, preserves, soups and other sauces you’re going to need room. Have a protected corner of the basement up off the ground ( enough that a wet floor will not damage the food ).

Emergency preparedness is a noble endeavor, one that every individual should be engaged in. But, in order to make it an efficient pursuit, it shouldn’t be performed haphazardly. Many people start out with good intentions, but are misguided in their preparedness and food storage activities. They have a great goal in mind (i.e., being ready for the worst should a disaster or emergency occur), but there is no method to their madness. After they have randomly accumulated some of the necessities for any possible perceived threats, they are not then sure if they have all they need, and if they have allocated their resources properly. Of course almost anything is better than nothing, but there should be some prioritization beginning with preparation for a short-term disaster survival scenario all the way through to a “doomsday” predicament. Not everything can be prepared for because it is impossible to accurately predict the future, but it is certainly better to be over- than under prepared, and the best approach is to build a rock-solid emergency preparedness foundation and add to it in the proper sequence.

The proposed sequence is as follows: the first thing that everyone should store in case of emergency is a 72 hour emergency kit. A 72 hour emergency kit is an easy-to-carry and easily accessible package that contains items such as three days of water (most important) and non-perishable food items (preferably ready-to-eat goods), personal toiletry/hygiene items, first aid kit and medications, flashlight and batteries, blankets and sleeping bag, a radio, pocket knife, etc. 72 hours is the time frame that it will likely take to restore the usual services that are interrupted after a major disaster. You should plan on being self-sufficient for at least these three days.

The next level up in the readiness pyramid is a three-month supply of food storage that would include items that you ordinarily eat and can be rotated easily, eliminating any waste. These are such things as canned goods that fit easily into your food pantry or an extra closet, as well as frozen foods (meat, preserves, and vegetables).

MRE’s (meals ready-to-eat), freeze-dried foods, and dehydrated foods are the next step up in prioritization. These food storage items store for long periods of time in a climate-controlled environment, usually between 10 to 30 plus years.

Dry-pack storage items such as wheat, white rice, and beans move us even further up the readiness pyramid. These items are very nutrient dense, and take more work to prepare meals with, but are extremely versatile and can be included in too many recipes to count. They are very good staples for your diet. Other dry-pack items include powdered milk, powdered eggs and powdered butter, bullion (chicken and beef), flour, pasta noodles, etc.

After having considered food preparation adequately, it is time to move up the readiness pyramid to the level containing extra clothing and footwear. Remember you must consider the climate in which you live and the change (or not) in seasons. If you live in a region that has harsh winters, be certain to have adequate coats, sweaters, thermal underwear, warm clothing, gloves, boots, and blankets.

The next level up the pyramid is firearms and ammunition. First and foremost these serve as tools for killing game animals for meat should this become necessary. Secondly, these may serve as protection in the event of a disorderly societal breakdown (rioting, looting, etc.) where you may need to protect your family from harm.

Camping equipment basics such as tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, camping stoves/Dutch ovens, fishing pole and tackle, a Leatherman, matches, a lantern, and porta-potties will all make you much more confident in your abilities to survive in the outdoors if you need to move even further up the readiness pyramid, and have to evacuate your home for whatever reason for a period of time.

A person may survive indefinitely without a shower, but not comfortably. That is why this category of personal hygiene items is nearer the top of the readiness pyramid, but still very much a valid and useful part of it. The specific items you should include here are soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, a razor and shaving cream, deodorant, feminine napkins, and diapers.

Finally, once you have completed your collection of each of the preceding layers and levels (and not before), top off the readiness pyramid with an emergency fund. This should cover as much as three to six months of living expenses, and then be supplemented with gold and especially silver (poor man’s gold) bullion.

West Hills, CA After a 5.4 earthquake struck the Los Angeles vicinity today Survival Kits Online a Southern California emergency disaster preparedness store, saw a drastic spike in customer sales to their retail store and internet site with people searching for earthquake kits.

The magnitude 5.4 earthquake shook the Los Angeles metropolitan area Tuesday, leaving residents nervous but causing no serious damage or injuries. It struck at about 11:42 a.m., according to the USGS, the United States Geological Survey. Its epicenter was about 2 miles southwest of Chino Hills and about 5 miles southeast of Diamond Bar. More than 30 aftershocks were recorded with the largest of those being a magnitude 3.6.

This shaker served as a warning to southern Californians to get prepared now with survival kits and supplies before the catastrophic one hits.

In an effort to explain to people that earthquakes are to be taken seriously and what is yet to come, Kate Hutton, a seismologist at the California Institute of Technology, said, “This is a sample, a small sample”.

“This is somewhere between small and moderate.” She said, “There is a 5 percent chance this quake could be a precursor to a larger earthquake. After 24 hours, that chance will drop to 1 percent.”

“Every earthquake relieves some stress,” Hutton said. “It’s usually only a drop in the ocean. In other words, the amount of stress released by this earthquake is minuscule compared to the amount that’s built up and is building up for the Big One when it happens some day in the future.”

A 5.4 magnitude quake is considered by the USGS to be “moderate,” which can cause slight damage to buildings and others structures.

The last moderate quake to strike California was a magnitude 5.4 in April 2008 in the northern part of the state.  However, the last major quake to be centered in a heavily populate area was the Northridge Quake of 1994 measuring 6.7 on the Richter Scale and causing 72 deaths and approximately 28 Billion dollars in damage.

According to the results of a study published in Science Daily in April, the California Geological Survey and the Southern California Earthquake Center stated that in the next 30 years, there is a 46 percent chance of California experiencing a quake of magnitude 7.5 or larger and a 99 percent chance for an magnitude 6.7 or larger.

“This earthquake reminds us to be prepared,” said California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. “We were very fortunate that there were no serious injuries or property damage.”

Despite the absence of serious damage or injuries, some Los Angeles area residents were left rattled. The quake was felt as far south as San Diego, California.  The USGS said it received reports of light shaking as far north as Rosamond, California, about 55 miles north-northeast of Los Angeles and as far east as Las Vegas.

A 72 hour survival kit for each person in earthquake country has been goal for not only the California Office of Emergency Services (OES) but also for the local Southern California based Survival Kits Online. This community input will be used to refine our assessment and will lead to a formal publication in early 2009.

So there may be some new continents emerge that are at the bottom of the ocean now.

Some of our known peaks like Mount Everest etc. will be like an island or so or perhaps ocean level will rise above it.Such an event IF HAPPENED will obviously wipe out the large population volume from the planet.So there is no such “SAFE PLACE” on the planet if mass flooding of oceans took place. But still there is the hope to survive through all the other bad events if they occured.

The only thing required is your will to survive & help others around you to survive. The other means not only your family or well wishers but the common peoples also who would be facing along with you the same/even worse situation than you in your surrounding at the time of the event.So, along with your will to survive you must learn some basic survival skills also and to practice them frequently in your locality and with other peoples.Study your locality completely, see exactly which survival methods you need to focus on & then master those methods.

That doesn’t means that you study only one survival technique and ignore the other; NO. you should know all possible survival techniques out there perhaps invent your own survival techniques and share them with others.

The more you skilled in those survival techniques the more your chances of being alive.e.g. if you are living in a posh city area then along with mastering in Urban Survival techniques, you should also learn jungle, flood, snow, drought etc . survival techniques. So you can cross utilize them any possible way you can just for sake of your survival.

Another important thing is your Emotional Behavior & Mental State.Don’t panic no matter what happens just be calm, stay steady a while (if you can) and try to get a hang of exact surrounding situation of events happening around you. Try to decide some basic or important priorities and make sure you stick to those. It may happen that you frequently need to refine or change the priorities entirely, do so if needed but follow those first.

The Basic things for any human survivals are Eatable Food, Drinkable Water & livable Shelter.If you manage to find all 3 basic needs you are like a rich person in the game of survival.Sometimes it might happen that the people of some particular religious community will provide you allthe above basic needs by forcing you to accept their god/ideas of living. Do so temporarily (until you get the better options to consider) if required. Because such bastards are always in search of needy people to encash upon their foul business. Don’t try to be robin hood/maseeha type hero for freeing those who already living(surviving) under those (religious/cultural) bastard’s rules mind your own business of “Survival”.

Surviving an emergency has nothing to do with luck.  In fact, if luck plays any part at all, it’s probably too small for most people to actually benefit from.  The best way to survive an emergency – any emergency – is to be prepared, aware and know what to do.  Having the right resources is also advantageous, particularly if these are exactly what you need to survive.  If you’re planning on buying a survival kit or putting one together yourself, here are the types of emergency food you should consider:

Dehydrated food

Canned food also provides plenty of choices – meat, fish, fruits and vegetables.  They can also be eaten straight out of the container.  Probably the only preparation you might have to do is to heat them for more comfort and flavor.

Consider packed meals as well.  Not only do they keep well, they are also very flavorful.  They come in single serves which make it easy to keep track of the number of meals you have.  Make sure to choose those that can be stored outside the freezer.  If the emergency food requires freezing, make sure you have the facility to do this.

Drink
Water is the best choice for all emergency situations and as such, should be a major component of your survival kit.  Regardless of the season or location, the ideal amount of water you should pack should be 1 gallon for each person per day.  If you’re storing emergency food at home, consider keeping enough to supply your need for fluids for at least 10 to 14 days.

Other excellent choices for emergency food for your survival kit are drink mixes, particularly the ready-to-drink or pre-mixed varieties.  Drink mixes not only contain pleasant flavoring (quite helpful in stressful situations such as emergencies), there are many made available in the market that are formulated with vitamins and minerals.  These drink mixes are especially helpful in combating the first signs of dehydration and can replenish important nutrients that may be lost due to the lack of proper food.

A disadvantage to drink mixes is that they cannot be used to cook food.  Your priority should be pure water and then simply supplement what you have with drink mixes.  If you’re unsure about the purity of the water you’ve stored in quite a while, keep a bottle of water purification tablets.  You can treat the water with these to ensure its safety.

One of the most frightening and destructive phenomena of nature is a severe earthquake and its terrible after effects. An earthquake is a sudden movement of the earth, caused by the abrupt release of strain that has accumulated over a long time. If the earthquake occurs in a populated area, it may cause many deaths and injuries and extensive property damage.

Minimize your movements during an earthquake to a few steps to a nearby safe place. Stay indoors until the shaking has stopped and you are sure exiting is safe.

If you are indoors:
• Take cover under a sturdy desk, table, or bench or against an inside wall, and hold on. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.
• Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.
• Stay in bed—if you are there when the earthquake strikes—hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fi xture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.
• Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, loadbearing doorway.
• Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Most injuries during earthquakes occur when people are hit by falling objects when entering into or exiting from buildings.
• Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fi re alarms may turn on.
• DO NOT use the elevators.

If you are outdoors:
• Stay there.
• Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.

If you are in a vehicle:
• Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.
• Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped, watching for road and bridge damage.

If you are trapped under debris:
• Do not light a match.
• Do not move about or kick up dust.
• Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.
• Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort— shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of
dust.

NOTE: Be aware of possible tsunamis if you live in coastal areas. These are also known as seismic sea waves (mistakenly called “tidal waves”). When local authorities issue a tsunami warning, assume that a series of dangerous waves is on the way. Stay away from the beach.
