In the food storage industry, companies are falling further behind with a new trend of growing demand on products. Can we pinpoint where this demand is from? Are we experiencing some sort of shortage in supply? We have seen recent disasters in nature and tough economic times, and either one of these factors could be a part of it. Also, it has been discussed that the United States Government is purchasing up large quantities of this long term food storage. Is this a sign of things that are on the way? That might not be the case, although, it is a good plan to get ready for what could happen tomorrow. There is no better time than now to prepare with food for long term storage.
I’m somewhat new to the industry but I am amazed at the extreme shortage that exists among food storage companies. There isn’t a company that is able to keep up with demand. Each week that goes on, more and more companies are forced to go from 1 week to 8 weeks to 8 months of lead time for their products. One of the largest food storage companies explains on their main page of their website that it can no longer sell directly to the public as it is trying to keep up with their distributors. And the thing that is most telling, as some of these companies think they are going to be able to finally keep up, the demand the next month is more than the month before.
Demand is at it’s peak for freeze dried and dehydrated foods as they can carry a shelf life of up to 25 years. The catalyst behind the shortage is the manufactures of the raw ingredients are not able to keep up with the demand. The locations that produce these ingredients are running at full steam. The main factor for why companies decide to use freeze dried food is that it lasts much longer, and won’t spoil as easy as other foods. In addition to that these meals are super easy to prepare as they just require water.
This trend doesn’t look like it will be improving in the near future. There continues to be increased demand. So why are people looking at long term food storage as a way to prepare for things like natural disasters, emergencies, man-made disasters, financial disaster and food storage? Well if you think about it, if a disaster were to occur, food and water would be the first things you’d look for.
In a recent news story a hurricane was about to hit a small town. As part of the story, the camera looked into a local grocery store. The first thing you noticed was that there wasn’t much left on the store shelves as everyone made a mad dash to be prepared for the imminent danger. Putting yourself in this situation, what if your food storage was all set? Would there be the same type of panic and necessity to seek food and water like these people did? There might still be concern with any potential disaster, however, there would be some peace of mind knowing that you had enough food and water.
Reality is most disasters don’t give us anytime to be prepared. This is a main reason I believe that a large majority of people are seeking out ways for them to be more ready for these events. Not being able to read into the future makes it very difficult to know whats on the horizon. One thing you can do is have a plan on how to provide yourself and your family with these two key ingredients of food and water.
In conclusion, take the time to be prepared. Companies that produce long term food storage are out there. They have fantastic products that address your emergency food storage needs. A couple of characteristics to look for include portability, shelf life, ease of use, good-tasting and stackability. And one additional bonus is that these same companies have designed these food storage meals in one easy to make package. And believe it or not they can be very affordable. I wish you the best of luck in being more prepared!
